Building Community by Understanding Place
A truly vibrant community is one in which:
Children grow up with a feeling of safety, aspiration, curiosity and know they are loved and cared for by everyone
Neighbors contribute to their community, help each other and want to live where they do
There is pride and a collective sense of place
The environment is safe, clean and healthy
Homes are warm, safe and comfortable
Vulnerable and lonely residents are cared for and looked after
Diversity is intentional, respected and celebrated
The world is changing. Shaw Island is changing.
Our ability to perceive change in a community is often dictated by the Rate of Change rather than the changes themselves. When change is rapid and apparent we see it immediately. When change is slow or hidden we may not notice. But in order to ensure that the changes that are happening, whether fast or slow, apparent or hidden, lead us to the place we want to be, we must pay attention.
The ZEN of Change
It is often said that “change is neither good or bad, it just is”. “Change is inevitable”. “You cant stop progress”. But change can be good or bad. How a place or a community changes over time can be measured against the metric of whether it is leading toward or away from where we want to be. Some change may be inevitable, and beyond our control. But most change that happens in a place can be directed and managed.
